Ignatius
is a person whose true figure is not always clearly perceived at first
sight. He has to be discovered. He reveals himself not to
superficial observation but only to a profound and persistent search.
Discovering him, of course, must not be an end in itself; it inspires us,
rather, to share the experience Ignatius had. for the person of
Ignatius is overshadowed by the spiritual adventure which, from Pamplona to
Rome, the Lord wished to live with him.
--Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, SJ
To
our old leader and true father. Don Ignacio, who, since he brought us
together with no little effort, will also with similar effort know how to
preserve, govern, and make us advance from good to better, since he knows
each one of us best.
--Francis Xavier, SJ
(On giving his vote to Ignatius for first general)

[Ignatius was] a man of great ingenuity and prudence in worldly
affairs and very skillful in the handling of men, especially in
composing differences and discord.
--Juan de
Polanco, SJ
